Thanks Lick!

Finally, thanks to a hint from Lick I can continue work on NDSMail! The problem I was having had to do with memory alignment. C also has some dark sides ;)
I'm so glad this is finally sorted out!

While hunting that nasty bug I mentioned, I rewrote large parts and dropped PAlib. However, it did not fix _the_ problem, but probably fixes some others .. and the .nds file is smaller. I also made some cosmetic changes to the ui. I'm still not too happy with the buttons, if anyone has some nice buttons, please let me know ;)
I ordered no$gba-debug, hope this will help me finally fix _the_ problem.

Seems the DS "scene" is a bit quiet at the moment. No news for some days on drunkencoders and dev-scene. I guess everyone is dreaming about WII ;)

I am considering buying the no$gba debug version, as the free version already reported a couple of errors. If you want to support development, there's a paypal button on the right ;)
Alternatively, you can also support http://devkitpro.org . Devkitpro is the most important toolkit for homebrew development. Without it, there would be NO DS homebrew at all!

Attachments + Repost

NDSMail now supports attachments. They can be saved to the flash card, and jpgs can be displayed directly. Attachment size will be limited though, probably to 1 MB.
I also added nicer buttons, which I think is the most important feature ever ;)
Head to http://www.bronto-online.de/ndsmail.htm for a screenshot ;)
The strange bugs are still there, so still no public release :/

Repost of previous entry
I'm still adding lots of features and improvements to NDSMail, but due to some very strange bugs (probably related to devkit 19b, but I am still investigating) there are no new releases at the moment. I hope this will be resolved soon.

Delay, SSL

I'm working on a non-DS-related project which unfortunately takes longer than expected. Hence the lack of updates for NDSMail. However, I will probably do a maintenance release soon with new fat drivers and some other fixes.
There seem to be a lot of problems with the newer Supercard variants. Unfortunately these are very hard to track down and fix without the hardware.

WIP

I'm quite busy with university at the moment, so progress is very slow..

However, it seems that the (seemingly)random crashes are caused by the keep-alive ping to the access point.
I'll hopefully be able to release a new version within the next few days, with keep alive as an option and using the latest version of the dswifi lib.

Also, I would like to thank Rich for his kind donation :)

Delay & new feature idea

Unfortunately, I won't be able to work on NDSMail for the next 7 days or so.

It seems there are some problems with mini-SD flash cards (SC miniSD,M3 miniSD). This is rather strange, as they should be compatible to the SD cards. I think this is caused by the special version of the fat lib I'm using. The new libfat looks very promising, but it does not support the SC SD yet.
If I had one of the flashcards causing trouble, I could improve compatibilty ( hint hint )

a friend of mine proposed a great feature:
auto-connect:
If none of the preferred access points is found, the app will try to connect to any of the (open) access points in range. So if you are in a public area, chances are that you will find an open, non-protected access point. (Note that this may be illegal in some countries. But I know that at least in germany you are allowed to connect to any access point that is not protected).

NDSMail SSL

SSL support is almost ready. It works fine for me,however I have the guys over at the gbadev forums test it before the public release. This and germany's terrific victory over Argentina in the world cup are my top news for today :)

SSL almost ready

Yes, it is true.. the ssl lib is finally working :)
now I'll polish it just a little bit more (clean up code, make more stable) and then there should be basic ssl support (GMail and most other servers) in NDSMail very soon now :)

Cheers!

Quick update

The ssl lib is currently in early bugfixing state, so I hope there will be a test version out soon.

Since the issue keeps coming up: gmail and other ssl-only mail providers are not be supported until the ssl lib is done (which will be soon)..

NDSMail 0.45

I'm back! Had a really good time in spain, relaxing on the beach...no computers..so I actually only played some New Super Mario Bros Minigames with my girlfriend..she beats me almost every time.. I'm getting old ;)

OK. now for something more interesting for you:
NDSMail 0.45

- multi mail account support
- separators
- *really* stable now.. thanks to the latest dswifi lib :)
- forgot the rest ;)

Get it at the usual location and have fun :)

Away for 1 week

I'm on vacation next week, so no updates in the next 8 days. New version of NDSMail is almost ready, but there is one bug I couldn't track down yet, so unfortunately this has to wait.

Take care!

NDSMail 0.44

I just uploaded NDSMail 0.44 to the usual location

Changes:
- Uses latest dswifi version
- Improved connection code - should be faster & more reliable now
- Put keep-ap-connection-alive function back in
- mail display slightly improved
- asks you if you want to save your settings when leaving the settings screen
- reply button disabled for feeds

As you certainly noticed, progress is a little slow lately. I'm quite busy with other things at the moment, so no SSL yet. I would probably need about 1-2 free days for a first version. I'm planning to make it available in some way to other DS developers once it's done :)

Supercard MiniSD

It seems there are some problems with the new Supercard MiniSD. Apparently it is not 100 % compatible with Chishm's FAT lib, or at least the modifications I made to it in order to add write support for the Supercard SD. Perhaps some more SC MiniSD users can report their experiences, and if other homebrew apps work.

As for the good news,SSL is coming closer :)

Supercard SD write support

I finally found a way to add write support for Supercard SD so you can save your settings. This was the first time I could actually test the save settings feature, and I found out it is very bugged. I already fixed this, but it I want to work on newsfeed support before releasing a new version. This will also contain the latest version of dswifi.

status report

OK, here is a short update of what I'm working on at the moment.
SSL is on high priority now. I'm currently trying to figure out how to extract and decode the server public key from the server certificate. If anyone knows about this stuff, please contact me.

I'm not doing much bugfixiing for NDSMail at the moment, as I'm waiting for new version of sgstair's wifi lib & chishm's fat lib. I think that especially the recv bug causes a lot of crashes.

As always, new version out soon :)

NDSMail 0.41

- correctly converts some tags like line breaks, so mail/feed display is a lot nicer.
- file writing probably did not work at all in 0.40
- better error handling / access point reconnect
- default settings in nds file, so users without filesystem support can hex-edit their settings

For those who are waiting for SSL, it will not happen before the release of a new version of dswifi.

As always, I'm working on cool new features, stay tuned :)

Download is at the old location

If you find any feeds that do not work with NDSMail or just feeds you would like to share, please post them in comments.

NDSMail 0.40 featuring RSS/ATOM support

Newsfeed (RSS/ATOM)support

You can set up the feeds you want to read in the settings / feed settings menu. NDSMail also looks for a file called ndsmail.fed in the flash card's root directory. ndsmail.fed is a text file, each line contains the URL (full URL with http://) to a RSS or ATOM feed.
To download the feeds, press on the button in the main screen to switch to mode, then press Receive.
Please note that I did not disable the New/Reply buttons in feed mode yet, pressing them will give unpredictable results.
I added 2 feeds as defaults so you can test it right away.

Bug where settings file got corrupted should be fixed (can't test it)

Shows status while connecting to access point

Some mail display bugs fixed

Many more things I can't remember

Note that most bugs with incomplete/corrupted messages are because of a bug in dswifi which will be fixed soon.

New version 0.37

New version 0.37

new features:

- access point select screen (Press Start while it tries to connect to one of the default access points); may not work perfectly yet
- pop3 code improved
- smpth authorization fixed
- compose message improved
- keep alive packets sent for all screens (except dialogs)

known bugs:

- sometimes messages are displayed incorrectly or duplicated, crashes while downloading mail. most important issue at the moment caused by a bug in dswifi
- keyboard causes freeze when used too quick (palib)
- bad error handling in mail send
- config file writing not supported on some flashcards like SCSD
- keep alive packets send for all screens (except dialogs)

Note to those who can't connect to their access point:
please try wifi_lib_test (get here). If it can't connect, your AP is not supported by dswifi yet

About crashes

I found a bug in the dswifi lib. This is what probably caused most of the crashes during message download. Luckily sgstair will fix it. In the meantime I will be adding some more features to NDSMail.

Of course I will release another preview version soon :)

Slowdown

I have some new features ready, but I encountered a bug in TCP communication which I'm still trying to work around. It may not affect many users, but it's pretty serious as it may cause very nondeterministic results.
Access Point selection will be included in one of the next versions!

NDSMail troubleshooting

Supercard SD user getting configuration file read errors please try this version:

If it cannot connect to your access point, please check your settings in a wifi-enabled app or game.

SMTP support

Today I added SMTP support to NDSMail. This means you can send mails with NDSMail.
Now you can actually send and receive mails on the toilet !!!

I was even able to send mails while I was waiting at the mannheim train station. Thanks T-Com/T-Mobile ! (And, this service is free :)

For those who want to give it a try (please be aware that it is still an unfinished version, use at your own risk)

http://www.bronto-online.de/ndsmail_prev.zip

WIP

Alright, seems the latest version (0.24) works with most SCSD configurations (others mostly untested, SCCF probably does not work).
More bugfixing on the way..

Shots !

WIP

I released a preview version of ndsmail today. In the beginning it was not working at all on any nds other than mine, but I fixed it. Turned out the problem was in the ARM7 core. The FIFO buffers where not set up properly. Tomorrow I will try to find out why it crashes for some people at "Retrieving message headers" or "Closing connection".
If you want to send me a mail to my NDS: ndstest@NOSPAMPLEASEbronto-online.de. Of course you remove the NOSPAMPLEASE part first :)
SMTP is not implemented tho, so I won't be able to reply.

hot news !!

OK, stephen stair ( the great) released a new version of dswifi with TCP! I immediately started working on including it into NDSMail. After hours of sweat and hard work ;) I finally managed to connect to a POP3 server and receive the subject lines. Some more work to make it more stable, then I plan to release a test version in the next days !

If anyone is interested, I can post some screenshots of NDSMail running in Dualis (of course without any connectivity) or I can try to take some pictures with my crappy handy-cam :)

I'm alive

Just to let you know, NDSMail is coming along pretty well. Basic UI is ready, and the pop3 protocol handler is passing the test cases (at least when compiled under windows).
Besides that, I got Animal Crossing...so I'm busy paying off my mortage. If anyone wants to visit my town, drop me a line.

About this blog

(me) :Hi, my name is Martin
(choir) : Hello Martin
(me) : I'm (afraid) I'm a computer geek, studying at the University of Mannheim, house-music-lover and bedroom-DJ.

So here's why I created this blog..
Well, my english has been suffering a lot during the last few years in school, and I feel I should work on improving it again. So I decided to start a blog in english. Feel free to correct me :)

To make things more interesting for you, I will write about some semi-interesting things, like software I am developing (currently I'm hooked by my Nintendo DS, and I hope to release a E-mail client for it *very* soon) or even IT-scientific stuff (like my investigations on whether my girlfriend is turing-complete)
And sometimes, when I get really enthusiastic, I might even post miscellaneous house music stuff.. baby!

Opera for Nintendo DS !

Apparently the Opera web browser will be released for the Nintendo DS. Unfortunately, for now only a japan release is planned. Rumours say it will be out in july !

Eat that PSP ;)
